CANEY RESIDENT “TWICE LUCKY” – WINS $25,000 TOP PRIZE

TOPEKA, KAN. – Michael Moreland has been “twice lucky” playing Kansas Lottery instant scratch tickets. A couple of years ago, the Caney resident won a $5,000 cash prize playing a $5 Super Red Hot Crossword instant scratch ticket. Today, he came to Lottery headquarters to claim a $25,000 top prize he won playing a $5 Twice Lucky Double Play game, which features a scratch game on one side and a pull tab game on the other side.
“I buy tickets 4-5 times a week,” explained Moreland. “I like playing $5 and $10 tickets. I seem to have the best luck with the $5 games.”
Moreland, who is a self-employed carpenter, scratched his winning ticket yesterday afternoon at the store where he purchased it.
“I thought I had won $20,000 at first,” said Moreland. “I was shook up over that. I had forgotten my glasses in my truck, so I asked the owner if I could borrow his glasses to make sure I was looking at my ticket right.”
Come to find out, Moreland didn’t look at his ticket correctly. He actually had a $25,000 winning ticket!
“I didn’t scratch my ticket off all the way,” said Moreland. “I didn’t realize that until I got home. I had called my brother and my dad about my $20,000 win and had to call them back and tell them it was really $25,000.”
Moreland, who is single, plans to restore his 1957 Chevy and put the rest of his winnings into a savings account.
The winning ticket was purchased at Salsman Oil Co. located at 211 S. High St. in Caney.
